1773: Indians attack a party of pioneers as they approached Cumberland Gap. Daniel Boone’s eldest son James was killed along with 4 others. The party turned back.
1889: The Opera House in Middlesboro was completed. The season began with the comedy “Culpepper.”
1905: Gentry Brothers Circus arrived in Bell County. There were 200 trained ponies, 150 “dog actors,” 75 monkeys, baboons and gibbons as well as two herds of camels and elephants. In addition, there were a number of “big, sensational circus acts.”
1921: The Union Tannery of Middlesboro was attempting to avoid the pollution of Yellow Creek by installing 48 vats to purify its discharge water.
1933; Middlesboro High School football team lost to Manual High School in Louisville 19-0.
1955: Bell County showed a decrease in population due to the decline in coal mining. Between 1950 and 1955 Bell County had a loss of 15,000 in population or a net change through migration of 20%
