1890: The Duke and Duchess of Marboro arrived in Bell County in their private railroad car, the “Maraquito.
1897: The first case of smallpox diagnosed in the Rhine area of Middlesboro. (This led to a full blown epidemic in early 1898.)
1904: The Odd Fellows had a membership of 120 and a three story hall on 21st Street in Middlesboro.
1919: Cornerstone laid for a new courthouse in Pineville.
1940: The Middlesboro Hotel advertised a full course turkey and dressing dinner for $.50, which was promised to be “a challenge to mother’s finest culinary efforts.”
1965: Several Bell County football players were named to the All-Southern Conference first team: Greg Page, Jim Lake, Doug Williams, George Cadle, Kermit Owens, Tommy Barton, and Hank Barnes. Middlesboro’s coach, Walt Green, was named Coach of the Year.
