Cleudis Robbins wrote his debut novel with his daughter Janene E. Nielsen. Robbins was a child of the 1930s coal mining camps of southeastern Kentucky. The Burying Man is his love song to Appalachia.

The Bell County Historical Society has as one of its principal objectives the preservation and dissemination of information about the history and people of Bell County and the surrounding area.

Duties include: Keeping the museum open and staffed during hours of operation; supervising a staff of two part-time employees and several volunteers; overseeing the management of the gift shop; overseeing all events; overseeing the upkeep and maintenance of the building; maintaining the budget and paying bills; overseeing accessions and cataloging of museum items; promoting museum events in the media and on the website; overseeing docent training and giving tours to school groups and other visitors if necessary; helping to plan and create exhibits; writing grants; and assisting the Board of Directors on other duties as needed.

The director is expected to provide leadership for creating a positive image within the community. A professional appearance and strong people skills are required. A background check is required.

The successful applicant will have:
A basic knowledge of Bell County history
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Past Perfect, and Quick Books
Basic book-keeping skills
Experience in supervising employees

The director is expected to work an average of 30 hours per week on a flexible schedule. The salary is $12,000 a year with paid holidays off. This position is for one year and may be renewed.

Did you know?

Middlesboro once had a brewery.  Originally the Overbeck Brewing, it was a brewery, cold storage, and ice manufacturing plant. It was later the New South Brewery before being used by the Schneider Packing Plant in Cumberland Gap. The land was then absorbed into the Cumberland Gap National Park. The building was five stories and served by railroads on both the east and west sides. It was located at the base of the Gap and was a local landmark for many years before being destroyed by fire.
