“…Harland Sanders [of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame] was in an accident at Binghamtown in Middlesboro. Geneva Warner, 8, was killed and Pauline and Gladys Jackson, 6 and 11, were injured. Mr. Frank Ely had taken the children from their home in Capito to visit relatives in Binghamtown. Mr. Ely had stopped his car at the intersection of the main highway and the road to Binghamtown School. The children got out of the car, and Mr. Ely cautioned the girls to be careful. They went behind Mr. Ely’s car and stepped in front of Mr. Sanders’ car. Mr. Ely and Mr. Sanders took the children to the Middlesboro Hospital. Geneva died on the way to the hospital. Chained Rock Overlooking City of Pineville

“…In 1931, a bunch of ‘the boys,’ including some from the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, salvaged a giant chain from a dredge on the Tennessee River. It was hauled by mule-team up the mountain, where it was ‘spiked’ into a boulder that looked as though it might come tumbling down in the Narrows. The other end of the chain was anchored into the rock of the mountainside. That chain would no more have held that enormous rock than would a cotton thread. ‘Chained Rock’…was nothing more than a joke, something to draw tourists.
